The God I Never Knew
The Holy Spirit is a Person
Paul Foslien, Senior Pastor, Living Word Family Church, Naples, FL

The Holy Spirit is our go-between. He takes the things of Christ and reveals them to us, for us, and through us.

Dr. Max I. Reich put this beautifully when he said, “If we make room for the Holy Spirit, He will make room for the Lord Jesus.” The converse is also true, that if we do not make room for the Holy Spirit, He cannot make room for the Lord Jesus.

The “secret sauce” to a believer’s life is learning to make the correct adjustments to the Holy Spirit’s leadings so Christ can be formed in us.

The denial of the “person” of the Holy Spirit has been denied throughout church history, but evidence exists for His personhood.

Attributes of the Holy Spirit

  1. He has intelligence: He knows and searches the things of God.

1 Corinthians 2:10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. (NKJV)

  1. He possesses a mind:

Romans 8:27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. (NKJV)

  1. He is able to teach people:

1 Corinthians 2:13 These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. (NKJV)

  1. He can be grieved by the sinful actions of believers:

Ephesians 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. (NKJV)

  1. He has a will that is used in distributing gifts to the body of Christ:

1 Corinthians 12:11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills. (NKJV)

  1. He also directs the activities of Christians:

Act 16:6-7 Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia. 7 After they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit did not permit them. (NKJV)

Because a genuine personality possesses intelligence, feelings, and will, and since the Spirit has these attributes, He must be a person!

The Holy Spirit truly is the God that we can’t see, but He works in, for, and through us to achieve all that God desires for our lives!

Take time to consider the role the Holy Spirit plays in your own life.

Christ-Centered for Life,

Pastor Paul
