You Can Never Replace Kindness

#12) “I don’t think Christmas is necessarily about things. It’s about being good to one another, it’s about the Christian ethic, it’s about kindness.” Carrie Fisher
The Bible has a lot to say about kindness. Here are a few scriptures and thoughts from commentaries:
Col 3:12-13 NLT “Since God chose you to be the holy people He loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.”
Kindness in the Greek is chrēstos; “benevolent, gracious, kind,” opposed to “harsh, hard, bitter, sharp.”
I love the Albert Barnes notes on kindness: “Christianity produces true courteousness or politeness. It does not make one rough, crabby, or sour; nor does it dispose its followers to violate the proper rules of social contact. The secret of true politeness is “benevolence,” or a desire to make others happy; and a Christian should be the most polite of people.”
No amount of gifts given will ever take the place of kindness. As a pastor for over 20 years, I can tell you from experience that couples who try to give gifts to make up for their lack of service never last. Harsh words in the morning proceeded by flowers at night will only build resentment tomorrow. The book of Colossians tells us to “clothe ourselves with kindness,” and “make allowances for each other’s faults.” How do you do that? The same way you wake up every morning to get dressed. You get up and decide what to wear for the day. To clothe yourself with kindness, do the same thing – get up in the morning and decide that you will walk (dress) in kindness. Every action or reaction for the day, then, will be met with the love of God as you choose to be kind.
Let us end with one more verse: Galatians 5:22-23 NKJV says, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such, there is no law.”
Kindness is a fruit to be enjoyed by everyone we meet!
Peace and Grace,
